Since becoming a Straw Hat, Sanji has played a key role in their success. With such an interesting backstory, an amazing personality, and some spicy kicks, it is easy to see why Sanji is so popular within the One Piece community. Despite the manga having over a thousand chapters, there are still certain things about Sanji that are only covered in other sources, and for the convenience of the fans, these have been compiled into this list.

8 Name Was Supposed To Be Naruto

Over time, Sanji has become one of the most popular anime characters in the world. Even the fans who have never watched or read One Piece know him by his name. Before the series began, Oda had planned a different name for Sanji.

The name that was chosen by Oda was Naruto, which is the name of the protagonist of Masashi Kishimoto’s manga series. This would have undoubtedly caused confusion between the two characters, so Oda decided to change his character’s name to Sanji. This bit of information was revealed in the Green Databook.

7 Original Designed To Be A Gunslinger

One Piece novels, magazines, and other sources often contain information about original character designs and backgrounds that are not disclosed in the manga. In One Piece Color Walk 1, it was revealed that Sanji’s initial design was supposed to resemble that of a gunslinger.

This means that Sanji would have used his hands to fight, but Oda went in the completely opposite direction with Sanji’s final design. Eventually, Sanji became a character who only used his hands for cooking while fighting with his legs.

6 Main Lead Of A Spin-Off Series

Sanji is one of the most loved characters within the One Piece community. To provide more content for Sanji fans, Yūto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki, of Shokugeki no Soma announced that they would be working on a spin-off series, titled Shokugeki no Sanji.

It has a total of six chapters, which are completely focused on Sanji, and his time at the Baratie. The spin-off series is excellent, and every Sanji fan should give it a read. It is available on the official Shonen Jump app.

5 Favorite Brand Of Cigarettes

One of Sanji’s most defining traits is his smoking. Sanji’s obsession might not be as strong as Zoro’s with sake, but he does not shy away from lighting a cigarette every now and then. While it is definitely not healthy to smoke, Sanji’s smoking does make his character appear a bit more classy.

Sanji fans had always wondered what Sanji’s preferred brands of cigarettes were, and after waiting for a long time, they finally got an answer when Oda revealed that Sanji uses two brands of cigarettes. These are: King Ground and Death, the latter of which is no longer produced in the real world.

4 Based Off Steve Buscemi

Oda has never been shy when it comes to displaying his admiration for both historical and fictional characters. More often than not, Oda tackles such questions in the SBS.

Before Oda’s statement, many fans believed that Sanji’s character was inspired by Leonardo DiCaprioLeonardo DiCaprio, as both of them are quite charming and love wearing suits. However, Oda has confirmed that Sanji is, in fact, modeled after Steve Buscemi’s character in Reservoir Dogs.

3 Only Straw Hat With Biological Siblings

The Straw Hats consider themselves to be a huge family. They look out for each other, and they are not scared of putting their lives on the line. The way they treat each other, anyone would be fooled into believing that they are related by blood. Except for Sanji, no Straw Hat has any siblings, instead, they have adoptive brothers and sisters.

Considering Sanji has siblings who share the same blood as him, it wouldn’t have been unreasonable to think that they got along just fine. When the Vinsmoke Family made their debut in the Whole Cake Island arc, it was revealed that all of Sanji’s brothers had abused him physically in the past. To make matters worse, his own father had him locked up. After learning about his tragic past, it is clear why he loves the Straw Hats and Zeff so much.

2 What Devil Fruit Would He Have

When Sanji was a kid, he read a book about devil fruits, which contained information about the different kinds of devil fruits that existed in the world. It was during this time that he found out about the Suke Suke no Mi, a paramecia type devil fruit.

The devil fruit allows its user to turn invisible, which is the only reason why Sanji wanted to get his hands on it. Sanji was furious when he discovered Absalom had eaten the devil fruit. However, Sanji’s dream did come true in the Wano Country arc when he used his raid suit, although he destroyed it later. In an interview, Oda stated that if Sanji had to eat a devil fruit, it would be the Sui Sui no Mi.

1 SBS Based Trivia

In every SBS, Oda discloses new details about One Piece characters, and various other things. Suffice it to say, Oda has also talked about Sanji in these special questionnaires. Oda has revealed that due to their fashion sense, Sanji, Usopp, and Robin cut the hair of the crew.

Along with Nami and Robin, Sanji is the only Straw Hat who bathes regularly, which is hardly surprising since he likes to be at his best to impress the ladies. Like the rest of the crew, Sanji has been given specific numbers, which are 05 (the fifth Straw Hat to join the crew), and 32. In Japanese, 3=San, and 2=ji, which make up his name, and 59 (5=Ko, and 9=kku, which translates to cook). Another interesting detail about Sanji is related to his specific color which is blue.
